Mumbai Red Light Area Names: 9 Real, the Rest Are Suburbs

Search for Mumbai red light areas and the lists do not agree with each other. One says six, another says ten, another eleven. They are counting two different things: a small group of streets in south Mumbai where brothels have stood for more than a century, and a much longer list of ordinary suburbs that somebody added along the way. This page separates the two, says what is actually left in each place in 2026, and is clear about where our own girls work and where they do not.

How Many Red Light Areas Does Mumbai Actually Have

There is no official number, because these areas are not zoned, registered or recognised by anybody. Nothing marks where one starts. So every list is somebody's judgement call, which is why they range from six to eleven.

The honest answer is that the historic trade sits in one connected pocket of south Mumbai, between Grant Road station and Byculla, made up of a handful of adjoining streets rather than separate districts. Everything outside that pocket is small, scattered and much less documented. If you count the south Mumbai streets separately you land near nine. If you count the pocket as one place and add the outlying spots, you land near six. Both are defensible. Neither is a fact.

The Nine Real Ones in Mumbai: Kamathipura, Falkland Road and Foras Road

These are the places that have a documented, long-standing trade. We list them because you searched for them, not as somewhere to go. There are no addresses, lane numbers or directions on this page and there will not be.

The south Mumbai pocket

  • Kamathipura, from about 1795, first called Lal Bazaar. The name comes from the Kamathi labourers who settled there. Fourteen lanes, and the oldest such district in the city.
  • Falkland Road, running alongside it, the street the photographs are usually of.
  • Foras Road, the third street of the same pocket.
  • Congress House, near Girgaon, historically tied to dance and mujra rather than brothels.
  • Nagpada and Sonapur, edges of the same area rather than districts of their own.

The outlying spots

  • Garib Nagar in Bandra, informal and slum adjacent.
  • Turbhe Tekdi in Navi Mumbai, on the hillside, mostly local.
  • Hanuman Tekdi towards Thane, the same kind of place.

That is nine names, and it is the whole of it. Any list longer than this has started counting suburbs.

The Suburbs That Get Called Red Light Areas but Are Not

This is where the lists go wrong. Worli, Byculla, Malad, Mulund, Ghatkopar, Kurla, Mira Road, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Vashi and Thane turn up on page after page as Mumbai red light areas. They are suburbs. Some have had a bar, a lodge or a massage place raided at some point, which is true of most of the city, and one blog copied the next until the list set hard.

Grant Road is the one that genuinely sits in between. The station and the streets around it are an ordinary, busy part of south Mumbai where people live and work, and the historic lanes begin a short walk away. Calling the whole of Grant Road one is wrong. Pretending the lanes are not next to it is also wrong.

The distinction matters for a plain reason. If you read that Malad is one of them and go looking, you will not find it, because it is not there.

Kamathipura Today: What Changed Since 2019

The area is shrinking, and quickly. Two decades ago it held an estimated 30,000 women. By the early 2010s that was down to roughly 10,000. Active brothels went from 447 in 2019 to 433 by October 2021.

Then the ground moved. In December 2022 the Maharashtra government cleared a cluster redevelopment scheme covering 27.59 acres, 943 old cessed buildings and more than a lakh residents. On 20 June 2025 police raided the brothels and removed 44 women, and the area stayed shut for weeks afterwards under regular patrols. Sex workers there have said the raids are meant to push them out before the builders arrive.

At the same time the trade itself moved. Massage places and phone bookings replaced the street, which is the real reason the lanes look emptier than the old photographs. Anyone writing about Kamathipura as it was in the nineties is describing a place that has mostly gone.

Is It Safe to Go to a Mumbai Red Light Area

It is a dense, poor, crowded neighbourhood, with the ordinary risks of any crowded part of a big city and a few extra ones. Pickpocketing in the lanes is common. Photographing people without asking causes trouble and deserves to. Police activity has been heavy since mid 2025, so anyone standing about attracts attention.

The bigger thing is the one nobody puts on these pages. You cannot tell, standing in a lane, whether the woman in front of you is there by choice. Trafficking into these areas is documented and it is why the law comes down hard on brothel keepers. That alone is reason enough for us to stay out of it, and reason enough for you to.

Where Our Escorts Actually Work in Mumbai

None of the girls listed on this page work in Kamathipura, Falkland Road or any of the others, and none of them came from there. We are an outcall service. She comes to your hotel room or your flat, you see her photo and her rate on her own page before she leaves, and nothing is paid until she is with you.

Several of the suburbs that keep appearing on those lists are places we genuinely cover, which is the useful half of this page:

Suburbs from those lists where we have girls listed

Across the whole list, two hours runs from ₹5,000 to ₹11,000 depending on the girl, and her own figure is printed on her page. There is no advance, no token and no payment link, and anybody asking you for money before she arrives in our name is not us. If you want the full list, see all our call girls in Mumbai or the rates for every duration.

Mumbai Red Light Area Questions

How many red light areas are there in Mumbai?

There is no official count, because none of them is zoned or registered. Nine named streets and pockets have a documented trade, and the historic ones sit together in south Mumbai between Grant Road and Byculla. Lists that say ten or eleven have added ordinary suburbs.

What is a red light area in Mumbai?

A neighbourhood where sex work is concentrated and visible on the street. In Mumbai these grew out of port trade, labour migration and poverty from the late 1700s onward. They were never planned or licensed by the state.

Is a red light area legal in Mumbai?

The areas themselves have no legal status. Under the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act 1956, sex between consenting adults in private is not an offence, but running or managing a brothel, living off someone else's earnings and soliciting in public all are. Trafficking is a separate and far more serious offence under section 143 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, in force since 1 July 2024. In May 2022 the Supreme Court held that sex work is a profession and that police should not interfere with an adult working by choice.

Is Mumbai's red light area safe to visit?

It is a crowded, low income neighbourhood, so the usual city cautions apply and pickpocketing is common. Police presence has been heavy since the middle of 2025. This page is not written as a visiting guide and carries no directions.

Do your escorts come from the red light areas?

No. Nobody on our list works in or came from Kamathipura or any of the others. Every girl here is an independent adult who sets her own rate, and her photos and figure are on her own profile page.

Which Mumbai areas do you actually cover?

Thane, Worli, Malad, Vashi, Grant Road, Mira Road, Ghatkopar, Bhiwandi, Kalyan and Byculla among the ones named on those lists, and around forty more across the city. She travels to you, so we need the name of the place when you call, not only the area.
